On 22 May 1955, an Icelandic airplane from Loftleidir touched for the first time at Findel Airport in Luxembourg. The decision to establish a route between Luxembourg and the United States with a stopover in Iceland was perhaps one of the most important decisions ever made in the history of Icelandic aviation. The North Atlantic route of Loftleidir promoted Icelandic aviation to the status of an independent Icelandic service industry on the international market. Icelandic Airlines became pioneers in the international airline industry with their low-fare flights between Europe and the US. The route owed its existence to the air-route agreements between Iceland, Luxembourg and the US, in which there were no regulations on low fares, and the fare policy of Icelandic Airlines played an important role in the introduction of greater competition on the transatlantic routes between Europe and the States. The Luxembourg route has been an influential factor in the development of the international airline services in Iceland. It is, and has always been, the mainstay of the North Atlantic service of Icelandic Airlines. Over the past 40 years the route has fostered firm ties between two of Europe's smallest nations, and the transport histroy of the two nations is inextricably linked.
