Thema: Need information about this German postmark/cancel please
March Am: 16.07.2013 11:43:15 Gelesen: 5161# 1 @
It is on a Post Card sent on 30.07.28 from Mainz to Bad-Nauheim.

Is it a special postmark to celebrating something related to aviation or what please ?

For me the text above the plane is not readable but under the plane it says " die Luftpost "

Thanks

Hi March,

The word above Luftpost is " Benutze ", which means; "use Airmail ".

Greetings,
Chuck

So apparently it's a kind of illustrated postmark advertising for Air Mail sending at that time, 1928.

It is a typical "slogan cancel" exhorting people to use the airmail postal service.

Thanks Nigel.

Guess in 1928 air mail postal services were at the beginnings.

Hello - In Switzerland there was a VERY similar cancel, promoting the use of airmail!

Here see the nos. 3-5 of the Schweizerisches Luftpost-Handbuch, listing the "Werbeflaggen"-cancels (= Decoration to the "Kronenstempel" that indicated place and date of use). And another interesting point: the first cancel was of the year 1928 also! - Switzerland has some bi-lingual cancels - this one is german & french - Regards Heinz

Within Germany airmail services with the cards issued in 1911/12, utilising Germania and the so-called semi-officials Gelber Hund etc. Most of these cards are reasonably priced, and like Zeppelin covers tend to be philatelic.

Kurt Söllers from Osnabrück wrote and published a number of books concerning airmail services within Germany and also eternal airmail services.

The inflation period and resultant hyper-inflation put paid to all airmail services from 31.10.23. The only company to survive after 1923 was Lufthansa.

Hi March,

reading through the forum after some time I just stumbled over your question. Let me add some more information to the already given accurate and perfect answers. The slogan postmark you show is this one:

It depicts a high-wing type aircraft of the 1920's, the slogan has already been explained. The cancel is a so called "machine-serial cancel" which had been in use in various types of cancelling machines. First use was on June 24th 1927 and from that date on until the year 1944 (to be used once more even as late as 1954). A very frequent and common cancel which had been in use in a total of 92 German towns and cities.

There had been a second one, almost similar to your example:

The difference here is, that a low-wing aircraft is shown!

Kind regards,
Peter
